Women’s Health Q & A
What is a well-woman exam?
Well-woman exams are the foundation of women’s health care. These annual visits are an opportunity to get the screenings you need to stay healthy, as well as a chance to speak with your medical team about any areas of concern.
The best time to begin well-woman exams is around the age of 13-15. These visits will be less involved than later exams but provide an opportunity to build a trusting relationship with your practitioner.
What happens during a well woman exam?
At the beginning of your visit your practitioner gathers some basic information about your height, weight, blood pressure, and other vital signs. This data becomes part of your personal medical record, which is a valuable resource that tracks changes over time.
Next you’ll discuss any changes or symptoms you’ve noticed since your last visit. The information you provide allows your doctor to determine any additional screening that may be needed.
A pelvic exam follows, allowing your doctor to examine your cervix and vagina to look for tissue abnormalities. A Pap smear might be part of that process and involves gathering a small sample of cells from your cervix to check for signs of cancer.
You’ll also receive a breast exam. Pay attention to the techniques and pressure used so you can perform your own exams at home in between visits.
What are some women’s health needs I can discuss during my visits?
There is nothing off limits during your time with your doctor. You should feel comfortable discussing anything that concerns you or asking questions as needed. Some of the topics that often arise during women’s health visits include:
- Birth control
- Sexually transmitted disease screening
- Fertility care
- Abnormal bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Sexual health
- Hot flashes/night sweating
- Mood swings
- Fatigue/low energy
- Vaginal dryness
- Urinary incontinence
- Weight gain
Bringing in a written list of questions is a great way to ensure you cover everything during your visit. You’ll have plenty of time to broach these subjects with your practitioner, who is more than happy to guide you in your journey toward optimal health and wellness.
